HAVEN to showcase hybrid energy storage research at SEST 2026

This September, the HAVEN project will contribute to the scientific programme of SEST 2026 – the IEEE International Conference on Smart Energy Systems and Technologies, one of the leading events dedicated to the future of smart, sustainable and resilient energy systems.

Taking place in Ciudad Real, Spain, the conference brings together researchers, industry representatives and energy experts from around the world to discuss the latest developments in renewable energy integration, energy storage, grid flexibility and digitalisation.

As part of the conference programme, HAVEN will be represented in the session Renewable Generation Modeling, Assessment & Optimization through a presentation led by Maël Grandin from Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Exploring the operational value of hybrid energy systems

The presentation will focus on a research paper entitled The Operational Value of the Hybridization of Wind, PV and HESS in Isolated Power Systems.

The work investigates how wind power, solar PV and Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) can be combined within Hybrid Power Plants to improve the operation of power systems with high shares of renewable energy.

By bringing together different generation and storage technologies behind a single connection point, hybrid systems can increase flexibility and help address some of the challenges associated with renewable variability.

The research explores how Hybrid Energy Storage Systems can contribute to more efficient use of renewable resources while supporting system operation and reserve provision.

Why this matters for HAVEN

Developing and validating Hybrid Energy Storage Systems is at the core of the HAVEN project.

A HESS combines storage technologies with complementary characteristics. While some batteries are designed to store large amounts of energy over longer periods, others can react quickly to changing grid conditions. Together, they offer new possibilities for supporting renewable integration and improving system flexibility.

The presentation at SEST 2026 reflects ongoing research efforts within the project and contributes to the broader discussion on how hybrid energy solutions can support the transition towards cleaner and more resilient energy systems.
