BiTech, the Battery Innovation and Technology Center, is leading the development of modular battery systems in HAVEN. By designing and fabricating high‑energy modules with advanced chemistries, BiTech ensures that HAVEN’s hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) are safe, efficient, and ready for large‑scale deployment.

What’s the main role of BiTech in HAVEN?

BiTech leads Work Package 4, dedicated to modular battery system development. Its role is to design and manufacture the high‑energy modules that form a core part of HAVEN’s hybrid storage systems. This includes selecting and characterizing new cell chemistries such as advanced LFP and LMFP, developing prototypes, and ensuring compliance with international safety standards.

Beyond module development, BiTech contributes to the evaluation of battery technologies, supports the creation of degradation models, and provides technical and economic data for system optimization. It also plays a key role in defining communication protocols between the EMS and BMS, ensuring that the hybrid system operates seamlessly.

What are the main challenges BiTech may face in the project?

For BiTech, the main challenge is to bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and industrial‑scale deployment. Developing high‑energy modules with new chemistries is only the first step—the real test is ensuring that these modules can be produced consistently, integrated seamlessly into hybrid systems, and operated safely over many years.

Another challenge is anticipating the diversity of applications that HAVEN is targeting. A module that works well for EV charging may face very different stresses in a renewable power plant or in building energy balancing. Designing flexible solutions that remain reliable across such varied use cases is demanding.

Finally, BiTech must contribute to the broader goals of HAVEN: reducing costs, meeting strict international safety standards, and aligning with sustainability targets. This means not only delivering cutting‑edge technology but also proving that it is economically viable and environmentally responsible. These challenges highlight why BiTech’s role is so critical to the success of HAVEN.
