Powering Tomorrow – Why HAVEN Is the Hybrid Storage System Europe Needs
As Europe intensifies its efforts to achieve the Fit-for-55 climate goals and implement the REPowerEU initiative, the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) has become a cornerstone of energy policy. However, incorporating these intermittent sources into the grid presents a range of technical and operational challenges—generation uncertainty, voltage and frequency instability, power quality issues, and more.
To effectively manage these challenges and maintain a stable, reliable, and flexible energy system, advanced energy storage technologies are no longer optional, they are essential.
That’s where the HAVEN project comes in. Funded by Horizon Europe, HAVEN is developing a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) designed to deliver both long-duration storage capacity and fast-response grid services in one intelligent, modular solution.
By combining next-generation high-energy (HE) and high-power (HP) battery technologies with:
- Optimized converter systems
- Advanced, cognitive control tools
- A flexible and secure Digital Twin
- A focus on second-life battery integration
HAVEN’s solution will be capable of supporting a wide range of services, from frequency and voltage regulation to EV charging and energy market participation.
The system will be demonstrated in three physical and one virtual use-cases, validating its performance under diverse grid conditions and market environments, including balancing services and renewable integration.
What makes HAVEN a true game-changer is not just its technology, it’s the holistic approach. It addresses sustainability, cost-efficiency (CAPEX/OPEX), flexibility, and interoperability in one cohesive platform.
