Webinar Replay: What Does Sustainability Really Mean for Hybrid Energy Storage Systems?
On 1 June 2026, the HAVEN, SMHYLES, and HiHELIOS Horizon Europe projects came together for their fourth joint webinar, bringing over 30 live attendees from across Europe, Africa, and Asia into a shared conversation about sustainability in energy storage.
The session opened with HAVEN partner INEGI presenting the project’s approach to eco-design and lifecycle assessment (LCA) for hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), covering material impacts, system boundaries, and the environmental trade-offs involved in combining high-power and high-energy storage technologies. SMHYLES then shared their LCA and environmental assessment work across different storage technologies, followed by HiHELIOS, who presented their methodology for integrating second-life batteries and quantifying lifecycle impacts across four distinct use cases. A panel discussion brought all three teams together to address audience questions on recycling, grid electricity mixes, and the real-world limitations of LCA at early design stages.
The full replay is now available on YouTube. Whether you missed the live session or want to revisit the presentations, watch it here:
